Komugiko and Yakugashi (color) by fredrin Komugiko and Yakugashi (color) by fredrin
On a bit of a lark, i decided to play with color brushes and whatnot in CS5 and see how some of those felt to use.  I dunno, i can't help but wonder if my approach to coloring just simply does not work.  Sure, nice and colored and stuff, but to me it feels really pedestrian.  But anyways, a color version is still nice, so here ya go

I know an artist has to be objective of what they see and want in their art, but they still have to enjoy what they've created, if they're to keep up their abilities :)

I really enjoy your hatching/coloring techniques, which has kept me a loyal reader of your comic for at least 5+ years :D

Looks great!

If you watch most artists here on DA, it takes something like 5 years to develop your technique.

I like it!

Well, it took him almost double that time, so there is that. Time well spent, I guess.

True that.

With practice, that time will diminish.  Within a years time of regular practice, I think he will be startled just how much "easier" it is.  ("Piece of Cake" level of experience only comes with no less than 3 years time. ..plus or minus..depending on savings throws... ;D  )

Cheers Arcanask!

Hang in there Fred!  We're rootin for ya!

Fred, one of the things I like to do every now and then is look back at your earlier MT work, and man while you were good back then, now you have such an awesome grasp on the human (furry and otherwise lol) body. I love all your work, but especially all the work you do in your MT universe.

your coloring is actually pretty good. you seem to have a good eye for values and hues, it's just a bit outside your norm i think.

I'm not sure what you mean by your coloring feels "pedestrian", but I like it.

'pedestrian'... wut??? Nonsense! Every choice made, suits these characters quite well.

I watched you for several hours as you created this (I'm eisenwulf [my WoT screen name]), and was more than satisfied with the shaded version you turned out.

I regard this colored version as a happy bonus. DO NOT doubt your instincts... your choices did a superb job of projecting the 'essence' of these characters.

Over-thinking things is NOT a virtue.

I love your B&W work, but your colored pieces are always my favorites. The lines add so much depth to the base colors and give the pieces a very high quality look, even if the colors seem bland to you. Keep it up!!

Your coloring here looks markedly more sophisticated than your previous ones, giving a sense of dimension to your work. In addition, the lines are very clean, making this look like a better quality work. I really do like this!

I like how it came out - the mix of color with your shading brings out a nice quality.  I know color isn't your usual medium, but it's nice to see a change from time to time.  Reminds me I should do a little color work every so often.

The sash shows a particularly nice technique with the mixed colour 'scribbling' and I like the way you've mixed the hatching with colour shading, which keeps the comic book feel while adding depth.  Good characterization, as always.  Strong/fitting colour choices.  I'd be happy to see more like this =)
